MISSIONARY NEWS:

From Wayne and Joyce Raychard, missionaries to Kenya ~

Dear friends at Boothbay Baptist:

Thank you for giving toward our outgoing expenses.  It means a lot.  Of course, it’s all about God and we’re in this together for His glory (which happens to be our greatest satisfaction).

     Love, Wayne and Joyce

SPOTLIGHT on Duane & Miriam Mansveld, missionaries in Montreal, Canada (and our missionaries of the month for Sunday School offerings) ~

Duane and Miriam Mansveld have been ministering to the homeless since 1993.  They were appointed by Missions Door in February 2001.  Duane and Miriam both felt called to minister to the thousands of homeless youth and adults in Montreal, Canada.  Their ministry, Pax Street Community, exists to help the homeless and marginalized to connect to God, through a relationship with Jesus Christ, to others, and to the world.  They believe in taking the Word of God to the people on the streets instead of asking the homeless to come to a church.

After years of ministry they have not only earned their place within the street community, but are also known and respected by the downtown health and social service network.  Prayer and Compassion Walks are another part of their ministry where they lead church groups through downtown Montreal to talk and interact with the homeless.  They encourage the groups to put themselves in the shoes of a homeless person and ask, “Could you find a place to sleep?  What would you smell like? How would people look at you?”  These walks allow people to better understand the street life and to think about it in a new way.  When each walk is over, they give the participants a questionnaire to fill out and encourage them to reflect and search their hearts to see if they have any prejudice towards the homeless.  – From Missions Door

[More about the Mansvelds’ experiences next week]

From Tim & Nancy Pierce, missionaries to Brazil ~

Thank you for your fervent prayers!  We want to update you on how the Lord is working… The Lord has literally opened the gates of Heaven and poured out His blessings.  We were lacking $1,000, and we are now lacking only $496!  Please keep praying!  The Lord may still get us to the field in September!

Some of you have asked us to again share how you can have a part in our support.  If the Lord leads you to do this, simply write a check for the monthly amount at which you wish to support us for the next four years (i.e. $16/month or $32/month, etc.)  In the memo area, write “Tim & Nancy Pierce.”  Then include a note explaining this is committed monthly support for the next 4 years and send it to Baptist Mid-Missions, P.O. Box 308011, Cleveland, OH 44130.

Whether you support us financially and/or with prayer, we are thankful for each one of you and treasure your friendship.  Thanks again for your prayers — we know God will get us back to Brazil in His perfect time.                                                    In Christ, Tim and Nancy Pierce

MISSIONARY NEWS

From Paul & Miriam Beliasov in Indonesia ~

… We made it to our new home in Salatiga, Indonesia on July 5.

The school where Paul will be teaching prepared a house for us, so we walked into a lovely home filled with all the basic necessities: stove, fridge, beds, closets, living room set, etc.  Once we got over jet-lag, we really started doing some shopping to make the house a home, and we feel we have made great proress in just one week… We have met a few of the other teachers who work at Mt. View, but many are in the US at the moment as it is summer break.  We are so thankful for these few weeks to settle before school starts on Aug. 8.

Paul has done a great job putting to use all of the language that he studied in the US. Miriam and the kids are beginning classes with a lady who will come to the house.

There are many things different about where we are now compared with Chittagong, Bangladesh.  One main difference is that Chittagong was a big city; Salatiga is comparatively a big village.  Our house is on a brick road with chickens running everywhere and goats next door.  It is quiet at night.  No cars, no honking, no crows; my ears aren’t sure what to do with themselves!

The other difference we notice is that Chittagong is a port city so we lived at sea level, which meant tons of mosquitoes.  Salatiga is inland, at 2,000 feet elevation at the base of a volcano which reaches to 10,000 ft.  There are no mosquitoes (although lots of bats!)…

The call to prayer is one thing that is the same.  Five times a day we are reminded of why we are here.  The neighborhood mosque is just about four doors down from us.  Thank you for your prayers as we made this big transition. It was wonderful to see so many of you while we were in the US.

                                                  Blessings abundant,  The Beliasov clan

From Tim & Nancy Pierce, church planters in Brazil, now in U.S. ~

…We had been paying $1,150/month rent in Brazil but had to give up that house for furlough. In the area we feel the Lord is leading us to plant a church the rents have gone up to $2,000-5,000/month (perhaps fueled by the World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016). The upward trend is faster and steeper than we ever imagined! Either God is directing us to another neighborhood … OR He will show Himself a mighty God to give us a house for $2,000 (or less) in the same neighborhood we think He may be leading us to… [For funding] we are officially at 84% … we continue to trust Him and are moving forward to return to Brazil as planned in September. Please pray for our support and adjustment to the empty nest. Thank you.

MISSIONARY NEWS:

From Yoshito Kato, Word of Life, Japan ~

Greetings from Tokyo!  I have to admit, this year has been the toughest year of

my life.  As I face the reality of being alone and having to go grocery shopping, do my own cooking, cleaning and doing all the finances and still serving as a full-time missionary – it was only by God’s grace that I was able to make it this far.  Recently, though, things may be taking a toll on me.  I am having trouble with my lungs.  I cough constantly and there is a severe pain in my chest.  I have been to more than four different doctors, but they all say that everything is normal.  The physicians assume that my wife’s passing changed my life so drastically that the stress from it may be causing the malfunction.  Please pray for my health as I want to get back to the ministry as enthusiastically as I can.

I planned for all SYME students, teachers and staff to go March 2-4 to the Celebration of Hope crusade, sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse. This was held in Sendai where the earthquake and tsunami devastated the most. We served as ushers, greeters and security. Mr. Franklin Graham and some of our students prayed together before one of the meetings. Close to 12,000 people heard the Gospel and more than 400 people made commitments to Jesus over three days.

SYME graduation was held on March 24. We have special memories with these graduates and we will miss them greatly. Not only did we teach them the Bible and English, but we also acted out our Christian faith by distributing hot meals to the tsunami victims, serving at the Franklin Graham crusade, and participating in evangelistic activities through our local church… The new  school year at SYME has begun. The Lord has blessed SYME Japan with 24 students. God has brought 19 Japanese students and 5 Koreans!

My mother passed away at the age of 92 in January. She was a faithful Christian. My father was the first one to become a Christian in my family. They helped to build the foundation of Christianity in Japan after WWII. My father received a very noble award, Fukuin Kouro-Sho, as the most effective man to spread the gospel in the 20th century. Behind every successful man there is always a wife who is actually making it happen. Even though she did not get any award while she was on this earth, I’m certain that she has received a greater reward in heaven for her faithfulness. My father started the church that I took over, and now my oldest son, Kazu, has taken over after me.  Please pray for wisdom as he pastors in Tokyo.

One year has passed since my wife Hisako went to be with the Lord.  We had a memorial service on March 31 at the cemetery in Tokyo. Many non-Christian relatives and friends heard the gospel.

Thank you for being partners with us. I deeply appreciate your faithful prayers and support. May God bless you abundantly.

                                                                             Sincerely in Christ,

                                                                             Yoshito Kato

  MISSIONARY NEWS:

From Ross & Cathy Hodsdon, Baptist Mid-Missions ~

We traveled back to the Philippines for the first time in 27 years to work with the three Tagalog translation committees.  During our two weeks there we checked several chapters for each committee working in Matthew, Mark and Acts.  It was wonderful to work with old friends and see their enthusiasm for the work.

As Americans have found it nearly impossible to get visas for Venezuela, our Warao translation team has gone into overdrive trying to complete as much of the Old Testament as possible before long-time worker Marilyn Pitzer is forced to leave.  To speed the work, Cathy has been both working via the internet through questions that arise in the translation sessions and preparing new translation models… She has been working on the model for the Book of Ezra while that translation was being done in Venezuela.

In March we traveled with the Champeons and Kristy Montgomery to northern Thailand for our first-ever check of Scriptures in Akha. Because of good work before the workshop, we were able to complete over half of Mark in the single week of work.  Translators from Akha communities in several countries helped in the checking.  The day before we left the Akha in Thailand, we received the back translation for the book of Romans in Pemon. Because of the present confusion in Venezuela, Bob Nosker is not able to work on site but communicates via the internet with the native translator. Beginning on the plane home, Ross worked to check as thoroughly as possible the back translation. One great advantage we have in this project is that the language is a close cousin to the Makusi we spoke in Brazil decades ago. This means that Ross knows a good percentage of the vocabulary and understands how the grammar works. Two weeks after we arrived home, he completed the check and emailed it back to Bob. He and his translator are now going over all the suggestions and questions that we gave them. Each time they complete a few chapters, they send their questions to us. Then we initiate another round of suggestions for changes. Once the check of the Pemon Romans was completed, Ross began working on the remainder of the book of Mark in Akha… We are looking forward to a very complicated electronic check involving at least three countries of the five Akha homelands to complete the check of Mark in their language…             – Ross & Cathy

Happy Mothers Day!

Mother’s love is like an island

in life’s ocean, vast and wide,

a peaceful, quiet shelter

from the wind, the rain, the tide.

It is bound on the north by hope,

by patience on the west,

by tender counsel on the south

and on the east by rest.

Above it like a beacon light

Shine faith and truth and prayer;

And through the changing scenes of life

I find a haven there.

What a joy it is to see the Lord at work!  However, our support is weighing heavily on our hearts as we still need $1,600/month.  Only 92 days until we start packing up to move out of this house as another missionary will be moving in the first of September. .. A pastor suggested we ask you to pray for God to burden 100 people to commit to $16/month for the next four years within the next 92 days…This seems impossible, yet with God all things are possible.  We know God doesn’t need 100 people; He can bring it in in any way He wants. But it wouldn’t hurt to pray in faith for the Lord to lay our need of support on the hearts of people or churches for additional or new support.  Thank you once again for your faithful support and prayers. We know the Lord is in control and He’s our Hope in all things!

In Christ, Tim & Nancy Pierce

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.  Psalm 33:12

THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER is this Thursday, May 3, and our church is participating by holding a prayer meeting here at 6:30 p.m. jointly with the Boothbay Region Community Fellowship.  We will be praying for: local, state and federal government leaders; the armed services and law enforcers; education; the family; and the church. There will be music as well. The theme of this 61st annual observance of the National Day of Prayer is “One Nation under God.”  See the special insert in today’s bulletin and invite others.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS APPRECIATION BREAKFAST is next Sunday, May 6 at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.  Everyone is invited!  Please sign up to bring something to share.  There will not be Sunday School classes – it is a day off for the teachers!  See the insert in today’s bulletin.

IS THERE ANYONE GRADUATING SCHOOL this spring?  Please inform Mary Ann Nash.

CARE NET of Midcoast Maine writes:  We want to thank your congregation for   participating in our Sanctity of Human Life Sunday Baby Bottle fundraiser.  We had  33 local churches participate, and they raised a total of $15,884 for the ministry of Care Net.  Your congregation contributed $953.13.  The faithfulness of your congregation to give to Care Net enables us to provide services to families who find themselves in the midst of a planned or unplanned pregnancy.  We are able to provide hope, help, and the love of Jesus Christ through our staff and volunteers…. May God bless your congregation for giving, and we offer our services to any who need them.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE abound! The Nominating Committee seeks members willing to use their gifts and abilities for the body of Christ as the reorganized boards and committees go into effect.  Please prayerfully consider where the Lord might have you serve: in managing buildings and grounds, handling financial matters, or in ministering to the practical needs of folks in the congregation.  You may indicate your interest in being considered as a committee member or an officer by filling out a form (on the sanctuary back table) and/or speaking to a member of the Nominating Committee: Doug Wood, Tim Beck, Nancy Van Dyke, Jason Schlosser, Wes Witham, or Pastor Steve.

MISSIONARY NEWS:

From Dan & Sharon Pinkham, with Wycliffe, JAARS in N.C.~

Praise: David, our youngest son, and his wife Emily who were married early last June, 2011, announced that Emily is pregnant with Lily Faith Pinkham and due July 21. Please pray for our granddaughter to grow healthy and eventually become a woman who loves God with a whole heart! …Your prayers for the JAARS Aviation project conversion resulted in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) telling us they have more legal questions they must resolve internally… Pray for God’s leading through the FAA’s final decision. In the meantime JAARS Aviation continues to serve our teams as usual… Now we are in the middle of testing a major software upgrade. Pray that we can resolve all the problems by the end of May and go live June 1.

I was handed the responsibility of insuring we are using the JAARS facilities in a way that continues good stewardship of the resources God has given us. This has proven to be every bit as challenging as when I did something similar in 1998. Pray for wisdom, grace, and cooperation as I work with many departments and people and implement changes bit by bit.  Changes are coming but very slowly.  As you have prayed, Sharon’s service to missionaries in the laboratory has increased in the last six months.  In fact, the entire JAARS Clinic has been about four times busier than anticipated serving our team members. Please continue to pray for additional lab technicians, nurses, and a full-time doctor.

A colleague tells us that our service ultimately supports him in Cameroon to continue the training of translators… One result is the Gospel of Luke now in printed form and dedicated March 4. This is the first published book of Scripture for the Ngiemekoke language.  Pray this scripture will have a great impact in the lives of the people and in the daily functioning of their society.  Many people in the area still practice traditional religion, but there are some strong growing believers as well.

It is all about God’s Word in a mother tongue language so it can penetrate and change hearts! … Thank you for being faithful supporters so we can stay focused on God using us to speak to the least, the lost and the last through His Word.     Serving Him together, Dan for the Pinkhams
